The Foellinger Foundation offers three competitive grant opportunities to eligible 501(c)(3) organizations in Allen County that are not private foundations. These three grant opportunities
share a common focus on organizational effectiveness – helping you see your organization in a
new light to enhance your mission.

Leadership

Does your organization have a board member who deserves special recognition? Please consider nominating an outstanding board member for the annual Carl D. Rolfsen Stewardship Award. Nominations recognize local board members who exemplify the highest standards of board service and stewardship. All nominees are recognized at a special luncheon and in public service announcements. Applications are accepted beginning in April of each year, through the second Friday in July. Publicity for the nominees begins in September and continues through the nominee recognition luncheon in October. This is your chance to say “Thank You” to that special board member who leads by example. The award recipient’s organization will receive a grant of $10,000 for operating support and up to $7,500 for special board development training.

Strength

The Foellinger Foundation is interested in helping nonprofit organizations seize timely opportunities to improve their effectiveness. Because opportunities may arise at any time, the Foundation encourages organizations to apply when it is appropriate for their circumstances; this grant opportunity is not tied to a specific grant cycle. Decisions on Strengthening Organizations grant requests will be made within 60 days after submission of a completed application.
Grants in the Strengthening Organizations category are for one-time projects and requests may not exceed $10,000. Examples of eligible projects in this category include:
• Strategic Planning
• Succession Planning
• Board Governance
• Research and Evaluation
• Staff Development
• Financial Planning
• Exploratory phase of Strategic Restructuring
Other projects related to organizational effectiveness may also be considered. Grant funds may not be used for capital, program or operating expenditures, including staff.

Inspiration

There is no substitute for inspiration. The job of a nonprofit leader – perhaps the most important job – is to inspire others to help fulfill the organization’s mission. But who inspires the leaders? That question led the Foellinger Foundation to invest in a new type of grant opportunity, called Inspire. The intent is to provide nonprofit leaders (board members, executive directors, and senior staff) with opportunities to reflect on their work and renew their passions and creativity. The lessons learned from these opportunities are then applied to make the organization more effective over the long term.
• The availability of up to five INSPIRE grants will be announced annually in June, and grant applications will be due on the first Friday in September. Grant decisions will be reported by November
• Grants are for two-year project support beginning the calendar year following approval.
• Grants will made in two phases: The Inspire Phase (up to $15,000) during the first year; and the Action Phase
