Creative Collaborations for Food Insecurity

Between the pandemic and the cold weather, our community’s most vulnerable populations have a greater accessibility challenge than usual. But out of that challenge, a creative partnership was formed.

When they brought their services and resources together, The League for the Blind and Disabled (The League), Community Harvest Food Bank, Community Transportation Network (CTN), and Wellspring Interfaith Social Services were able to serve more individuals during a crucial time of year. These organizations leveraged separate funding sources that, together, helped protect the health and promote independence of Allen County citizens.

In the early stages of this collaboration, The League partnered with Wellspring Interfaith Social Services to set up two mobile food pantries for individuals with disabilities in our community.

As the weather got colder, they expanded their partnership to include Community Harvest Food Bank and CTN, establishing a food delivery service for people with disabilities. The League handled the enrollment—helping people with disabilities who are eligible for the program get information and sign up for services. Community Harvest used a Community Development Block Grant to pay for the food, and The League used CARES Act funding to pay CTN to provide the delivery service.

Thank you to The League, Community Harvest Food Bank, CTN, and Wellspring for your commitment to serving children and families in our community—particularly those with the greatest economic need and least opportunity.
