The Skills to Thrive
What skills does it take to build a thriving life? Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend (CCFWSB) sought to answer this question and enhance its programs, services, and operations as part of its strategic plan, “Building Roads to Hope.” Catholic Charities launched the Thrive Life Skills Course in the spring of 2024 as a part of that plan. This 10-week program empowers individuals and families by equipping them with the tools and knowledge to achieve long-term stability and self-sufficiency.
A Balanced Approach
Thrive Life Skills Course features an original curriculum developed by the organization with the help of a contracted professional and is facilitated by Catholic Charities’ case managers. These classes, which meet once a week in two-hour sessions, are grounded in best practices and research, all of which have proven to lead to higher rates of personal empowerment, wellbeing, and success in various aspects of life. The goal of Thrive is to help participants build a solid foundation for their futures by moving beyond just addressing immediate needs and focusing on sustainable, lasting change.
Topics cover seven domains of life: emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual. These areas were carefully chosen because they encompass the full spectrum of life’s challenges. The organization also offers participants a financial stipend and provides ongoing, one-on-one case management for one year after graduation.
“For me, I see the Thrive Life Skills Course as an extension of the job that I already do by serving others in vulnerable situations. Thrive gives me the opportunity to reach people on a deeper and more meaningful level. The content touches on essential life skills that foster growth through conversation and engagement. It is a safe space to give ourselves permission to learn and have a growth mindset.”
- Nicole, Facilitator
A Sense of Community
Thrive Life Skills classes can consist of 10–15 participants, who undergo an interview process before being selected. The classes are designed not only to teach practical skills but also to foster a sense of community, accountability, and personal growth among class members. Each class builds upon the last, allowing students to reflect on their progress and develop an action plan. Participants will leave the program with a stronger sense of self, a clearer vision of their goals, and the confidence and tools necessary to improve their lives and become more self-sufficient.
“I have enjoyed watching clients in the program evolve, becoming more confident, self-aware, and intentional in their lives.”
– Candy, Case Manager
Katie’s Experience
“Before participating in the program, I was nervous and skeptical it would help. Now, if I could do it all over again, I would. I learned the importance of communication and ways to strengthen my relationship with my three daughters. I gained so much confidence and not only learned how to think about the future but also make plans for it. With the help and encouragement of the facilitators and my classmates, I took the first step toward my dream of going to school to become a veterinarian and got a job at the zoo. I would have never even applied for a job like that if it wasn’t for their support. I hope that, through my actions and attitude, my daughters can recognize their worth, too.”
– Katie, 2025 Graduate
Ramona’s Experience
“At 55 years old, Thrive Life Skills taught me how to have a growth mindset. I was unhappy with my living situation and hadn’t worked in five years. And as the primary caretaker for my mother, I also had a strenuous relationship with her siblings. Through this program, I gained the confidence to make the changes I wanted in my life. I learned how to better manage my finances, moved into a comfortable home, maintained a job, and have even been promoted! I also learned to set boundaries with my family and have been focused on habits to improve my health. I am so grateful to Catholic Charities for helping me bring peace to my life and giving me the tools to live through my values every day.”
– Ramona, 2024 Graduate
A Collaborative Program
Early in 2024, Catholic Charities wanted to pilot the program before opening to the public, so they partnered with The Rescue Mission. Each week, one Rescue Mission employee accompanied several individuals in their programming to participate in Thrive Life Skills Course. They provided honest feedback, allowing CCFWSB to enhance the program before launching it to the community.
Catholic Charities continues collaborating with community agencies such as Connect Allen County, The Rescue Mission, St. Joseph Missions, Vincent Village, Community Corrections, Brightpoint, LSSI Inc., Iris Inc., Inasmuch Ministries, and other internal and community referrals.
Since its launch, Catholic Charities has graduated 28 participants from three classes, with another class that began in March 2025.
Catholic Charities’ Thrive Life Skills Courses offer participants the skills needed to move from surviving to thriving, promoting long-term wellness and self-sufficiency. In turn, the program has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life for families, reduce reliance on social services, and create more resilient communities.
Thank you, CCFWSB, for your commitment to uplifting our residents!
